What is a Basset
Hound? The Basset Hound is a long, low, scenting
hound of French ancestry. Despite a deliberate
unhurried manner and clownish demeanor, they possess
great intelligence and what may often be viewed as
stubbornness may more appropriately be attributed to an
innate ingenuity! Calm, good-natured and
affectionate they get along well with people, other dogs
and pets, as well as farm animals. However, they
are not a guard dog that would require them to actually
get up and respond to noise or mischief outside!
With their sensitive and stubborn nature, a Basset
takes punishment and reprimands to heart.

Being scent hounds they often let their
nose get them into trouble, by becoming lost while
tracking a scent. What makes this even worst is
that they are conveniently “hard of hearing” and will
not come when called if they are on a scent. We
have been lucky with our bassets and work hard to keep
them within the farms gates and fences.
The other thing that bassets love about the
farm is the baby animals. One of our basset’s
Tobi, loves babies! He is the first one to check
out new born kids and calves. You would think that
most cows and nannies would not allow him up to their
babies, but they seem to understand that Tobi means no
harm. Tobi can often be found snuggled up to our
cat or sleeping near a pile of kids, just to keep them
safe! We are also a foster home for www.suncostbassetrescue.org we have helped many bassets find forever
homes through Suncoast Basset Rescue. Please don’t
